Did you know that Agra is renowned for its exquisite hand-knotted carpets? Since the Mughal era, the city has been a thriving hub for carpet weaving, preserving centuries-old craftsmanship that continues to mesmerize the world. Today, Agra stands as one of India’s major export destinations for premium quality hand-knotted carpets, admired for their artistry and heritage.
As part of The International School Agra’s experiential learning initiative, our students recently had the opportunity to visit Kalra’s Cottage Industry, one of Agra’s most prominent carpet exporters. The visit offered students a fascinating glimpse into the world of traditional craftsmanship and sustainable artistry.

The educational tour began at Kalra’s showroom and continued to their carpet factory, where the students observed the entire process of weaving — from designing intricate patterns to knotting threads on the loom. It was an awe-inspiring experience to see skilled weavers, both men and women, working with unmatched precision, turning threads of wool and silk into beautiful masterpieces.
Students listened with curiosity as artisans and guides shared stories of Mughal carpets, Agra Jail carpets, and the evolution of weaving techniques through the ages. The session not only enriched their understanding of India’s cultural heritage but also inspired them to appreciate the patience, creativity, and dedication that go into every hand-woven piece.
At TISA, we believe that real learning extends beyond classrooms. Visits like these help our students connect with local traditions, learn the value of craftsmanship, and develop a deeper respect for India’s artistic legacy.
